Lucent searches overseas; equipment maker readies for wireless, networking boom

Lucent Technologies is exploring the possibility of acquiring firms overseas so it could be poised for growth in the field of data networking, wireless communications and global markets. People privy to the search said the equipment manufacturer is eyeing a deal by early October 1998. During recent months, Nokia Oyj, a Finish wireless device-maker and France's Alcatel Alsthom were being considered as acquisition targets. Ericsson and VocalTec are Lucent's other potential targets. Analysts said Lucent, which has confined itself to small-scale deals, has to hasten the pace of acquisition

AirTouch, Bell Atlantic may still link

AirTouch Communications is holding talks with Bell Atlantic on the possibility of establishing a wireless network joint venture. The proposed joint venture comes at a time when the UK's Vodafone Group has bidded for AirTouch and Bell Atlantic is negotiating to acquire GTE. AirTouch pres Arun Sarin said the proposed joint venture would result in a national wireless network.
