Luggage makers get a grip on fit

Luggage manufacturers are making smaller bags to adapt to stricter size requirements by passenger airlines. Samsonite is changing the size of some bags to make them fit better under seats and in luggage bins. Briggs & Riley is set to introduce an 18-inch bag in fall 1998 with space for a laptop computer. Many airlines now have a 22-inch sizing boxes to aid passengers in checking whether their luggages fit. Luggages that are too large are now checked in pursuant to guidelines issued by the Federal Aviation Administration requiring carriers to limit the number and size of bags travelers bring on board.

Buyers flock to Apple's iMac

Apple Computer's latest product, the iMac, is being swarmed by Macintosh fanatics. Retailers of the new Apple computer are reportedly about to run out of the product, which hit store shelves on Aug. 15, 1998. According to Larry Mondry, executive vice president of CompUSA, the launch of the iMac was the single largest selling day of any given computer that the store retails. Although Apple and CompUSA have not revealed specifics, analysts expect that 1998 sales of $1,299-iMac could reach 800,000.
