MCI may pay $100M to settle

Article Abstract:

MCI WorldCom is close to forging a settlement to pay at least $100 million to settle a class-action lawsuit over allegedly arbitrarily set, steep rates that it occasionally charges customers. Sources close to the matter report that the settlement could result in up to 2 million residential and business customer rebates ranging from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars. MCI would also agree to stop the practice. The pact, which could still fall through, is expected to be finalized during the last two weeks of Mar 2000.

Firestone voluntarily recalls 98,500 tires

Article Abstract:

Bridgestone/Firestone has voluntarily recalled 98,500 Firehawk GTA-02 tires, size P205/55R-16, manufactured between Jul and Nov 1999. Most of the tires were original equipment on 23,000 Nissan Altima SE sedans while 8,000 to 10,000 pieces were sold at tire stores. The company said the tires had steel belts that were too wide, which would cause them to be exposed or wear out, or the tires could crack open. Firestone said severe cracking could lead to uneven wear, vibration or slow leakage of air from the tires.
