MacBlo sells stake in MacMillan Bathurst

Article Abstract:

MacMillan Bloedel Ltd., a forest products company, has divested its 50% stake in MacMillan Bathurst Inc. of Mississauga in Ontario, Canada, the country's second-largest corrugated container company, to its venture partner, Stone Container Canada Inc. for C$185 million. Stone, a unit of Stone Container Corp. of Chicago, IL, then sold the half-stake to Jefferson Smurfit Group PLC of Ireland for the same amount. MacMillan Bathurst, which has a work force of 2,500 people, has 12 plants in six provinces of Canada and produces 450,000 tonnes of corrugated packaging material each year.

Fletcher vows to push for approval of deal

Article Abstract:

Forest products company Fletcher Challenge Ltd of Vancouver, British Columbia, has reaffirmed its plan to acquire the pulp and paper assets of its parent Fletcher Challenge Ltd of New Zealand. Under the deal, Fletcher Challenge Canada will assume its parent's C$2.4-bil debt and buy out the 50.1% interest it holds in the Canadian unit for C$1 billion. The transaction will create a giant Canadian paper and pulp company with C$5 billion in assets.
