Manulife posts record profit with 8% gain in 2nd quarter

Article Abstract:

Manufacturers Life Insurance Co of Toronto, Ontario, reported record earnings in the 2nd quarter of 1999, with an 8%-increase from year-ago results. The positive outcome resulted from favorable claims experiences, improvements in its main business, higher fee revenue and healthy stock returns. However, the insurer, which is anticipating a global initial public offering, saw a drop in its return on surplus from 14.2% to 13.2% in the 2nd quarter of 1999.
