Martin's message: the federal budget emphasizes deficit-cutting success

Article Abstract:

Martin submitted his 1997-98 budget amid political pressures to shore up support among the Liberal Party's traditional voting base of minorities, women and the middle class. Martin refused to revise deficit targets, but he did increase spending on health, education and a few other areas.

Martin believes Canadians recognize the need for austerity measures and most citizens and foreign investors approve of his budget cuts. He says the Liberal party is not turning away from its heritage, but rather is faced with new economic realities such as a global economy.

Austerity for hard times

The unemployed in Canada will see their government benefits reduced and in some cases, eliminated. Canada is troubled not only by unemployment, but by a federal deficit that government officials are trying to control.
