Math error may mean MP.3 owes more in lawsuit; award may increase up to 900 percent

Article Abstract:

The judge in the copyright suit against MP3.com reports that the jurors had intended the damages to be as high as $3 million rather than the $296,873 announced, due to a mathematical error. He says the jurors may have made an error in their division when figuring out how much should be paid to the Tee Vee Toons record label. Judge Rakoff has not yet entered a judgement, and has some discretion in how he adjudicates the case. A month ago, Judge Rakoff ruled that MP3.com was liable for copyright infringement for posting music from Tee Vee Toons CDs online.

261 LAWSUITS FILED ON MUSIC SHARING

Article Abstract:

Recording industry manufacturers are suing 261 individuals who allegedly shared copyrighted sound recordings via the Internet. The industry plans thousands more lawsuits over copyright infringement. Part of the legal strategy includes an offer for violators to destroy all of their illegally shared files and sign an agreement to cease online music trading if they want to avoid fines or imprisonment. It remains to be seen if the lawsuits will provide future copyright protection for artists.

In Court, Verizon Challenges Music Industry's Subpoenas

Article Abstract:

Verizon, a leading Internet service provider, is fighting a court ordered subpoena requiring it to turn over records on customers who engage in online music trading to the recording industry. At issue is the interpretation of a 1998 law, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, that allows copyright holders the right to demand records on people infringing on their copyrights.
