In order to encourage retirees to use their superannualtion as a stream of income rather than taking a lump sum, the Australian government is offering pension tax breaks. Allocated pensions can be structured to retain initial value, can be cashed in at any time and it enjoys the same tax benefits as complying pensions.

This article describes the tax penalties faced by many Australians who attempt to draw on their retirement assets only to find that they have exceeded the reasonable benefit limit. Strategies for avoiding the resulting tax penalty are presented.
