Mazda seeks name recognition

Article Abstract:

Mazda North America has unveiled the Premacy at the annual Chicago Auto Show. Premacy is a sport-utility/wagon that would be priced around $17,000. Its rear seats can be removed for extra storage and utility capacity. Mazda hopes that the vehicle would attract young males, a demographic group that it is trying harder to reel in. The company is wrestling with decisions about how to enhance its image with consumers. Its name problems stem from the fact that its products such as the Miata and the Protege are well known but people have trouble associating them with Mazda. Thus, the company is looking at possibly changing its naming system to make linking Mazda with model names easier.

GM's new SUVs don't carry warning

Article Abstract:

General Motors' (GM) new SUV models do not carry federal rollover-warning labels, in the hope that they would sell faster. GM says the warning labels are not necessary since its SUVS are long enough. Truck engineer Ted Robertson adds that GM's SUVs are no more prone to roll than its cars. The NHTSA requires the warning labels on SUVs with wheelbases longer than 110 inches or those based on car platforms. GM's SUVs, the Chevrolet Trailblazer, the GMC Envoy and the Oldsmobile Bravada, have 113-in wheelbases, 6 in longer than their predecessors.

Mazda plays up sporty side

Article Abstract:

Mazda Motor Corp's introduction of its Tribute sport-utility vehicle (SUV) in Jul 2000, will be accompanied by an advertising campaign that will feature the company's popular Miata sports car. The campaign, under the direction of Doner of Southfield, MI, hopes to give the impression that a Miata is present in every Mazda car. The Mazda Tribute SUV's association with the Miata is in line with the concept of an 'SUV with the soul of a sports car.'
