Mental health policy: are Americans with mental illness adequately protected?

Article Abstract:

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) includes provisions that try to protect workers with mental illnesses from discrimination and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission released guidelines to explain employers' responsibilities and rights in spring 1997. However, employers charge that the ADA encourages expensive, frivolous lawsuits through confusing rules, incomplete definitions and low evidence standards. Equality for the mentally ill compared to the physically ill includes similar psychiatric coverage which is hard to implement in any but the managed care environment.

Parental rights; are new laws needed to empower parents?

Article Abstract:

A nationwide parental rights movement is seeking new laws to protect parents from government imposition, but this issue is controversial. For example, Colorado's 1996 general election will include a constitutional amendment for parents' rights, and 27 more states have similar proposals in various stages. Opponents of the movement see it as a conservative attack on government which could lead to greater incidences of child abuse and neglect.

Would the Parental Rights and Responsibilities Act undercut established legal protections for children?

Article Abstract:

Disagreement exists on whether the proposed Parental Rights and Responsibilities Act would damage children's existing legal protections. Critics maintain that the act could be used against school curricula or to keep children in hazardous or abusive home situations. Supporters claim that limits on parental power would not be changed, but parents would have greater recourse to challenge government imposition on those rights.
