Microsoft deal worries Apple

Article Abstract:

Apple Computer's chief executive, Steve Jobs, is highly critical of the proposed settlement of Microsoft's antitrust suit, noting that it would encourage Microsoft to unfairly enter the education market, one of the few markets where Microsoft doesn't have monopoly power. The settlement would entail Microsoft donating over $1 billion in software and computers to poor schools. Apple's share of the overall market for personal computers is a mere 4 percent, but it estimates that around 47 percent of computers used in U.S. schools are Apple or MacIntosh systems. Critics and advocates of the settlement have made their presentations in court, and Judge J. Frederick Motz said he will rule by mid-December whether to accept the settlement or not.
