Disputed software to be used for online film distribution

Article Abstract:

Sightsound.com will use Gnutella to release 12 full-length Miramax films over the Web. The encrypted movie files are about 100MB each, so the service presumes a DSL or cable Internet connection. The movies will be available on a pay-per-view basis. The company is counting on commercial encrypting software to protect the films from pirating. Gnutella was developed as a video equivalent to the Napster music file sharing system popular with college students.

Slogging up PC hill at I.B.M

Article Abstract:

James Cannavino, head of IBM Corp's Personal Systems division, is taking IBM's microcomputer and software development forward to try to restore IBM's lost market position. Cannavino's management moves include signing distribution agreements with Intel Corp and Bull to expand IBM's market position; considering the acquisition of Northgate Computer Inc, a microcomputer clone manufacturer; selling IBM's PS/2 microcomputers by telephone; and setting a competitive price on IBM's N51 SX notebook computer. In spite of a $2,250 price tag, the N51 SX does not rate well compared to other notebooks, which analysts blame on Cannavino. IBM's major impediment in software is former partner in development Microsoft Corp, whose Windows products improve MS DOS capabilities. IBM's OS/2 2.0 operating system, in direct competition to Windows, has garnered good reviews, but its sales potential is still unknown. IBM's Dec 1991 reorganization is aimed at bringing IBM back to the forefront of its markets. Cannavino's division, which declined in revenue to under $8 billion in 1991, is central to IBM's plans.
