Microsoft's mood rides high after date with appeals court

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Corp has received a favorable ruling from the appeals court after it criticized a trail-court order to break up the company. Company watchers took the favorable tone toward Microsoft as a signal that Microsoft will begin steamrolling in earnest toward its goal of extendign its dominance in desktop personal computer software to the fast-developing Web world. However, the case has already had a huge impact on Microsoft's public image. The resignation of scores of talented managers and programmers is a brain drain that may be the most telling punishment the government could have dished out for the company.

Judge grants stay, sends Microsoft case to high court

Article Abstract:

Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson has allowed a suspension of strict sanctions against Microsoft Corp during its appeal to the Supreme Court. The antitrust case against Microsoft has ended with Jackson's decision to impose conduct restrictions against the software company. The stay of sanctions against the firm has been a victory for Microsoft since an appeal could last for two years. Prosecutors, however, believe that it was critical that the sanctions be imposed as scheduled to prevent it from stifling competition further.

Breaking up Microsoft misses the point

Article Abstract:

The Justice Dept's attempt to have Microsoft Corp broken up appears oddly misplaced in the light of the news about the Time Warner Inc-America Online Inc (AOL) plan to merge into an electronic commerce megaforce. Microsoft's breakup, if the Justice Dept succeeds in its intent, would become largely irrelevant if the Time Warner-AOL merger proceeds as planned because the latter would dominate Microsoft in revenues and nearly equal the software developer's market capitalization.
