Millar Western wooing investors with 'state-of-the-art' pulp mill

Article Abstract:

Millar Western Forest Products Ltd., an Edmonton, Alberta-based pulp mill, is attracting US investors with its sophisticated pulp mill in Whitecourt in Alberta. The company promotes the facility as the lowest-cost producer of a particular type of softwood pulp in the world. A 128-page prospectus from Millar Western said that its location in Alberta allows it to take advantage of low-cost and plentiful supply of fiber and a supportive provincial government. The prospectus also said that because of its low-cost position and high level of fiber self-sufficiency, the company believes that it is set to gain from the expected increase in demand for bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp in US and Europe.

Ghermezians assail ATB; brothers allege bank has 'bizarre' plan to back out of loan guarantees on West Edmonton Mall

Article Abstract:

West Edmonton Mall owners criticized government-controlled Alberta Treasury Branches (ATB) for the writedown on loan guarantees to the shopping complex. The Ghermezian brothers alleged that the bank has an incredible plan to withdraw from C$375-million loan guarantees, which were granted in 1994. In a two-page statement issued by brothers Nader, Eskandar, Raphael and Bahman, they said the bank is trying to destroy the mall's reputation. The mall owners added that ATB is negotiating so the mall's debts could be passed on to a strange "non-financial institution."
