More empty rooms means higher rates at Marriotts

Article Abstract:

Marriott International, one of the largest hotel operators in the US, has announced that it will try to raise room rates 2% to 3% in 2001, to offset more unoccupied rooms. The hotel chain reported better-than-expected earnings for 1st qtr 2001 but it warned that there is a greater chance that 2001 earnings will fall below, rather than beat Wall Street's consensus estimate of $2.12 a share. The chain is considered a good barometer of the lodging industry since its 2,163 properties cut across virtually all segments.

Hotel guests finding fewer free rides to Internet

Article Abstract:

Hotels are imposing charges on toll-free calls as more business travelers are using their laptop computers to connect to the Internet via toll-free numbers. Hotel officials say the fees are in response to customer complaints that the Internet-surfing guests are tying up trunk lines. Some hotels, meanwhile, are putting up dedicated lines for high-speed Internet connections.
