More retailers pull 3 Firestone tires from stock

Bridgestone/Firestone Inc's Firestone ATX, ATX II and Wilderness tires have been pulled off the shelves of Sears Roebuck, Discount Tire, Wards Auto Express, Dunn Tires and Tire Discounters following a government investigation on the safety of the tires. The Natl Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking at consumer complaints that the the tread peels off the tires, which can cause accidents. The company has urged customers to visit its stores to check the tires for problems. In addition, a product recall is being considered.

Sears stop selling tires involved in probe

Article Abstract:

Retail giant Sears Roebuck would stop selling Bridgestone/Firestone tires through its Sears Auto Centers and National Tire & Battery affiliates until the government has finished conducting its investigation on the tires' possible safety defects. Sears' decision covers the ATX, ATX II and Wilderness tires, which have been suspected of causing 21 deaths in 193 crashes. The tires are also standard equipment in Ford Explorer sport- utility vehicles, where most of the accidents have also happened.

Death toll rises in tire inquiry

Article Abstract:

Bridgestone/Firestone Inc's ATX, ATX II and Wilderness tires have been the subject of a probe by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigators since May 2000. When the investigation began, the NHTSA was looking only into four deaths linked to the Firestone tires. The number of deaths increased to 21 in late Jul 2000. On Aug 7, the NHTSA revealed 46 deaths associated with alleged defects in the tires. Complaints reached 270, compared with 193 in late Jul and 90 in May.
