Motorola cuts 3% of its jobs as chip demand cools off; tightening the belts at another high-tech

Motorola Inc. will cut 4,000 positions, or 12 percent of its semiconductor workforce worldwide. The firm said that this is a result of weak consumer spending. The cuts are meant to help Motorola recover, following a steep drop in profit that became evident after last year's third quarter.

Hitachi, facing a big loss, plans to cut 14,700 jobs

Article Abstract:

Hitachi Ltd. is laying off 4% of its employees, 10,200 in Japan (around 7,200 through attrition) and 4,500 elsewhere. The company, the largest employer in the country believes about $1 billion can be gained from the move but there is great pessimism for the industry and Japan's looming recession. The world's second-fattest economy is now catching the eye of the International Monetary Fund.
