Music: Craft's Stravinsky

Article Abstract:

Robert Craft was a friend, colleague, and biographer of Russian Composer Igor Stravinsky. Craft met Stravinsky when Craft was 24 and Stravinsky was 66. Craft lived with Stravinsky for 23 years. Craft is an accomplished author and composer. He has a unique insight into the musical philosophy of Stravinsky. Craft has now completed fifteen Stravinsky CDs.

Like young: jazz has been attracting its first young audiences in decades - but are they hearing a music without a future?

Article Abstract:

The Black American classical music jazz will not attract young mainstream listeners if too much emphasis is placed on traditions. Young jazz players with big record contracts are lauded because they are young. Today Wynton Marsalis is jazz guru, but if jazz does not interest youth, it may not sell.

Pure roots: the Smithsonian has reawakened Folkways Records, a peerless repository of our native music

Article Abstract:

Folkways Records, which was founded in 1947 by Moses Asch to document American folk music, was purchased by the Smithsonian Institution in 1987. Smithsonian Folkways has begun a progam to record international folk music and is issuing recordings of previously unkown tracks from its archives.
