Mutual Life customers may share $2.9-billion

Mutual Life Assurance Company of Canada has mailed to its policyholders a 226-page guide that contains the details of its plans to convert to a publicly traded company owned by shareholders. The demutualization plan needs the approval of at least two-thirds who will cast their ballots in a special meeting scheduled on Jun, 10, 1999. The planned IPO is expected to give its 900,000 policyholders around C$1.9 billion-$2.9 billion in windfall shares and cash.

Sun Life badly mauled again by fallout from pension sales scandal

Article Abstract:

Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada has posted a profit of C$50 million on revenue of C$7.7 billion in the 1st half of 1999, from a loss of C$238 million on C$6.6 billion in the 1st half 1998. The US, Canada and Asian- Pacific operations posted profits of C$212 million, C$99 million and C$33 million, respectively. The UK operation lost C$237 million as a result of the British pension sales scandal.

Amex Canada, TD strike card deal

Article Abstract:

American Express Canada Inc. has reached a deal with Toronto-Dominion Bank in which it will distrubute its credit cards to the bank's corporate and commercial customers. The move represents another expansion by Amex into Visa credit card territory.
