Nintendo and Minnesota set a living-room lottery test

Article Abstract:

Minnesota will test a system that would allow Nintendo users to play in a state lottery from their homes. Control Data Corp, Minneapolis, MN, is developing the system. Nintendo sets are already installed in a third of the homes in the US, and if Control Data's tests in Minnesota go well, the company plans to offer the system in other states. The test in Minnesota will involve 10,000 homes. Players who set up accounts with the lottery will select numbers via their television sets. Selected numbers will be stored in a central lottery computer and in a user's Nintendo set. To collect a large prize, a player must go to a state lottery office and be identified. Small prizes will simply be credited to players' accounts.

MCI plan on often-called numbers

Article Abstract:

MCI Communications Corp plans a service that offers discounts to residential long-distance customers for frequently called numbers. The 'Friends and Family' plan is to be announced at a news conference at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan on Mar 18, 1991. Analysts say that customers can receive a discount on frequently called numbers that the customers list with MCI. Additional discounts may be offered to customers who persuade family members or friends to use MCI's long-distance services. The 'Friends and Family' plan is likely to benefit MCI by increasing the company's market share and providing marketing data on potential customers. According to one industry observer, the plan is 'a good customer acquisition tool.'
