Politics govern bank merger prospects

The Canadian Parliament is expected to pass legislation this summer which will reform the financial services sector and contain a new merger review process. Public opinion is seen to be against bank mergers with many people thinking that banks are already too big and powerful.

National Bank would consider merger: 'I'm not closing the door,' chief says

Real Raymond, Chief Executive Officer of the National Bank of Canada, is considering uniting with other sector if the federal government allows integration in the financial services sector. This revised merger review report with guidelines is to be published by June 2004 and will accept proposal for merging after September 2005.
