Navigating through reference works on disk

Article Abstract:

Online encyclopedias are among the most useful CD-ROM electronic reference books that are currently available. Compton's Multimedia Publishing Group Inc's Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia for Windows and Grolier Inc's New Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia for Windows are the most popular. Both are easy to use, even without consulting the manual. They offer icon- and text-based buttons that users push to navigate through the voluminous quantities of cross-referenced text and linked illustrations, with the Compton's product also offering animations and videos attached to some sections. To locate the article on computers in Compton's, users select Contents on the home screen to bring up an alphabetical list with an entry for Compute. The 7,000-word article is organized into subsections. In Grolier's, users must first go to the Technology section, then the Computer Technologies subsection and finally to the 15,000-word Computers article.
