New Jersey acts on video terminals; the goal is to reduce hazards like eyestrain and tendinitis

Article Abstract:

The State Health Department of New Jersey issues guidelines to state, county, and local governments, as well as to school districts, which are intended to reduce video display terminal (VDT) hazards. An estimated 500,000 public employees in New Jersey work with VDTs. New Jersey will make the guidelines mandatory for public employees, hoping that private companies will follow the state's lead. Guidelines include 15 minute breaks every two hours and eye exams every two years. The guidelines also cover lighting requirements and equipment. Measures to relieve or reduce problems with tendinitis are included.

I.B.M. cuts computer radiation

Article Abstract:

IBM has improved the terminals of its large computers by reducing their radiation emissions. Although the company claims that there is no evidence that the video display terminals (VDTs) of computer systems pose a health hazard with electromagnetic radiation, it is responding to increasing concerns expressed by customers. The changes have been made to mainframe and minicomputer terminals, and IBM plans to incorporate the technology in future personal computers as well. Other computer makers have no plans to follow IBM's lead until stronger evidence for a link to health problems is uncovered.
