New tanker designs

Article Abstract:

There has been little improvement in oil spill clean-up technology which has resulted in the focus of environmental protection efforts being shifted to spill prevention. Double hulled and double bottomed oil tankers have been considered as a means of preventing crude oil discharge during tanker accidents; however, oil companies believe these tankers are unsafe and uneconomical. The 1990 Oil Pollution Act mandates preventive maintenance of tankers, barges and underground oil transfer pipelines as well as prescribes that tanker designs now be checked by the US Coast Guard.

Response delays

Article Abstract:

Delays in responding to oil spills have caused large scale pollution of the environment. The Exxon Valdez accident and the Mega Borg explosion were not contained quickly because government agencies disagreed over procedures and because the necessary equipment had to be brought from distant locations. Oil spill response is now determined and coordinated by the US Coast Guard. The major oil companies established the Petroleum Industry Response Organization, an organization which has the equipment and training to contain and clean oil spills.
