New wireless phone system introduced

Article Abstract:

Southwestern Bell and Panasonic introduce Freedom Link, a wireless telephone system that functions as a cordless phone in an office and a cellular phone outside. Freedom Link, which costs about $2,500 to install, will be marketed in 54 cities within Southwestern Bell's territory in Apr 1993. Panasonic will sell the product in other cities under the name Business Link. The new telephone system improves on cellular phone technology by allowing companies to set up small radio base stations inside buildings and to link them through the companies' internal phone lines by using a computer. Individuals and small companies may not find the system practical; the basic network equipment starts at about $15,000 while the telephone itself costs $700 each.
