Anglo American makes big bet on nickel mining

Article Abstract:

Anglo American Corporation of South Africa Ltd has announced its plan to boost its stake in Anaconda Nickel Ltd of Australa from 3% to 23% for $211 million in cash. The investment will increase Anglo American's moderate exposure to the nickel industry. Anaconda has recently invested A$1 billion on the first phase of the Murrin Murrin nickel mine that will produce nickel and cobalt from low-grade laterite ores by employing sulphuric acid and pressure-leaching with electricity.

AngloGold raises bid for miner

Article Abstract:

AngloGold Ltd. again raised the price of its offer to buy Normandy Mining Ltd., and also announced that Barrick Gold Corp. wished to participate in the transaction. Even so, it is not as high as Newmont Mining Corp.'s offer. Franco-Nevada Mining Ltd. is backing Newmont.
