Nortel clinches big U.S. deal

Nortel Telecom Ltd. of Brampton, Ontario, has been awarded a five-year, $1.5-billion contract to supply digital wireless equipment and other services to SBC Communications Inc. of San Antonio, TX. The deal, which is viewed as an important step in Nortel Telecom's becoming the lead supplier for SBC, calls for the supply of digital switches and the upgrade of both hardware and software for SBC's operations. SBC, which is touted as a future major player in the telecommunications industry, operates in seven states of the southwestern and Pacific US.

Beck family ends dynasty, sells Noma to U.S. firm

Article Abstract:

Noma Industries Ltd has agreed to be sold to General Chemical Group Inc for $330 million, or $9.25 per share. Noma manufactures wire products for the automotive, appliance and electronics industries. Noma is controlled by the Beck family of Toronto. It was established by 45 years ago by the grandmother of Noma's president and CEO, Catherine Beck. The Beck family's share in the sale is $90 million since it owns 27% of Noma's 37 million shares.

Loss of icon will change retail landscape

Article Abstract:

The sale of troubled department store chain T Eaton Co Ltd to a US retailers will drastically change the landscape in the Canadian retail industry. Analysts said that the closure of the retail icon could spark a wave of bankruptcies and consolidation among retail companies. Direct competitors Sears Canada and Hudson' Bay Co have expressed interests in acquiring a number of Eaton stores that will be up for sale.
