Old economy companies learn new economy tricks

Article Abstract:

Walgreen exemplifies so-called Old Economy companies which are able to properly use the Internet. Walgreen lost more than 40% of its stock value in 1999 when rival Drugstore.com conducted its initial public offering in 1999. Walgreen responded to Drugstore.com's challenge by methodically planning, developing and establishing an electronic commerce system that has proven to be as sophisticated as that of most pure e-commerce companies. The firm's stock value has more than doubled as of Dec 2000. Drugstore.com, meanwhile has announced a layoff and its stock has lost nearly all of its initial value.
