Australian retailer Coles Myer Ltd has appointed former trucking man John Fletcher to take over from Dennis Eck as chief executive officer. Fletcher joins a company that has been turned around by US retailing expert Warren Flick, but with doubt arising over the effectiveness of Flick's strategies, analysts are questioning whether Flick will survive Fletcher's new regime.

Murdoch's holy grail

Rupert Murdoch needs to gain control of DirecTV, the world's biggest satellite television broadcaster and the leading US operator, if he is to fulfill his ambition of creating a worldwide satellite network to supply news, entertainment and sports around the clock. He is facing competition for DirecTV from EchoStar Communications Group, owned by Charlie Ergen.

Orica's big bang

Article Abstract:

Phil Weickhardt stayed with the explosives company Orica Ltd. when the British company ICI withdrew and bought their business to turn Orica into a global company. Unfortunately the price of natural gas increased, Weickhardt has had to go and the company is in trouble.
