Ottawa's housing market red hot

Article Abstract:

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. forecasts that sales of existing homes in Ottawa would jump 15% in the year 2000. This is the largest ever increase in sales of any metropolitan region. In the first six months, sales increased to 11% in 1999, which was 19% higher than in 1998. High tech executives, who earlier lived mainly near their place of work, in the city's suburbs, are increasingly moving into the established neighborhoods, which were once the preserve of senior bureaucrats and university professors. The residents tell stories of prospective buyers, pockets bulging with the proceeds from stock options, knocking on the doors and asking owners if they want to sell. The high tech executives moving to Ottawa do not want to live in the suburbs. They want inner city living with all its amenities. They come from overseas or the US and want the sophistication of an established, heterogeneous community.
