'Our target was terror.' (US strikes against alleged terrorist sites in Afghanistan and Sudan)

Article Abstract:

President Bill Clinton ordered the firing of 80 missiles from US warships to hit terrorist targets in Afghanistan and Sudan. Some in Washington suggested these missiles were aimed at diverting attention from Clinton's legal problems, but many Republican and Democratic lawmakers indicated these strikes were overdue. Opinion polls also suggested the public supported Clinton's decision to strike against terrorists in response to embassy bombings of Africa.

Why only a bomb would do

Article Abstract:

The U.S. was caught unawares by the Indian nuclear test. India's ruling party BJP led by current Prime Minister Vajpayee had always supported a nuclear program. However, Bill Richardson felt that was election rhetoric. After India's test, Pakistan looked to the U.S. for security. Offers of conventional weapons were seen as inadequate and Pakistan conducted its own test.
