A view of the Australian government's proposal to create two, $176m, centres of excellence is presented. The centres will be for research in biotechnology and in information and communications technology and there is intense competition for the sites.

Article Abstract:

A view of the problems affecting the storage of radioactive waste materials in Australia is presented. In particular, the failure of some states to accept waste from other areas and the consequent need for more disposal sites is discussed.

Agreements between Russia and Australia over movement of Russian equipment through Australian territory and use by Australia of Russian equipment are discussed. Implications are evaluated.
