Parizeau in hot water: did he compare voters to trapped lobsters?

Article Abstract:

Political cartoonists in Quebec made great levity out of Premier Jacques Parizeau's alleged remark that Quebec's electorate would be 'trapped like lobsters' after a vote in support of Quebec sovereignty. Some Parizeau aides denied that he ever made such a remark, but Parizeau has refused comment.

Changing of the guard

Article Abstract:

Bouchard's asendency to premier of Quebec could leave the Bloc Quebecois without a leader until its next convention in 1997. However, it is likely that an interim leader would be appointed sooner, possibly Gilles Duceppe. The Bloc could also lose its status as the official opposition party.

Parizeau was never to be trusted

Article Abstract:

Parizeau's assertion that he would have claimed sovereignty following the Oct 1995 referendum had there been a Yes vote has made in clear that Quebec sovereigntists are as divided as Canadian federalists. Conflict is evident among both leaders and rank-and-file members.
