Patent stirs Web uproar

Article Abstract:

Amazon.com Inc of Seatlle, WA, is facing a boycott after it was granted a broad patent for affiliate programs. The boycott, which was started by nowebpatents.org, has already drawn over 1,000 individuals. Affiliate programs, which account for 10% to 20% of the revenues for electronic commerce sites, permits Web sites to refer traffic to one another for a certain amount. The granting of the patent could result in additional licensing fees and other charges.

Surge in sales boost H-P

Hewlett-Packard Co. continued to express concern over long-standing business problems that might affect its revenues and profits in 2000. The company did not expect to resolve these issues overnight. Industry observers noted that Hewlett-Packard has continued efforts to improve the sales of its servers in the wake of fierce rivalry from firms such as Sun Microsystems. However, they expect the firm to achieve 13% growth in 2000.

More start-ups pay their bills with stock

Article Abstract:

An increasing number of Silicon Valley-based start-up companies such as public relations specialists, landlords, consultants and law firms are preferring stock options in payment for their services. Sometimes, the company gets the shares while other times, individuals in a company get them. In general, companies give away equity under 1% or 2% to minimize the risk entailed in major decision making by those who own stocks.
