Patients' rights

Article Abstract:

Issues related to managed healthcare and the rights of patients are many. They include access to specialists, the most frequent source of friction between patients and their plans, conflict of interest of practitioners, and regulations' discouraging innovation. So far only Texas directly subjects health plans to malpractice liability and that law is being challenged by Aetna on grounds it preempts federal law. Missouri has repealed a law that gave health plans a malpractice defense. Rhode Island and Washington have commissions to study the issue. On both sides of the issue there is wide support for reform at the federal level.

Children's television: will the new regulations make it better?

Article Abstract:

The adoption of a three-hour requirement for educational programming per week and content advisories on television programs are the newest efforts to improve the quality of television watched by younger viewers. The rating system has been recently modified to include specific tags for violence, sex, crude language and suggestive dialogue as well as age-based ratings. However, opponents to the rating system contend that the ratings do not reflect specific content of episodes and so viewers miss quality programming while it does not aid parents.
