Photo industry changes focus to Internet

Article Abstract:

More digital camera users are putting their pictures online, threatening traditional film developing services. Bricks-and-mortar photofinishers, however, are starting to offer hybrid approaches, including online services and in-store printing labs and digital kiosks, to serve the digital photography market. Most users of digital cameras currently print their pictures at home, but this is expected to change when they realize that service providers can provide cheaper results for better quality prints. Digital technology has increased photography use among businesses. In the US, 90% of households have film cameras, while 10% have digital cameras. Among US Internet users, 15% have used photo service Web sites to place photos online, and 35% have viewed other people's photos online. According to graphs, digital camera usage is expected to increase from 9.7 bil images in 2001 to 44.9 bil images in 2005. Online photofinishing is to account for 13% of digital camera printing in 2001 and 47% in 2005.
