Plan could make Census' long questionnaire short-lived

Article Abstract:

Privacy concerns relating to the long form Census will likely result in the elimination of this questionnaire before the 2010 Census is conducted. This is welcomed by Census Director Keneth Prewitt, who wants the long form Census questionnaire that is sent to 20 million households every 10 years to be replaced by a form called the American Community Survey (ACS), which would go to 250,000 households every month. Prewitt has renewed the bureau's pleas to Congress to adopt the ACS by as early as 2002.

Census shaken by grumbling

Article Abstract:

The public backlash toward the national Census appears to be gaining momentum. Officials worry that Census workers who have to go door to door to solicit answers from people who did not mail their forms will run into more resistance, causing many of them to leave their jobs. The latest mail response rate released by the Census Bureau indicates that 60% sent back their forms as of Apr 7, 2000. An increasing number of the population in 2000 appear to believe that the Census is invading their privacy, with their sentiments being aired on radio, in Congress and newspaper editorials.
