Policy holders need more information: consumer advocates

Article Abstract:

The Canadian Life Insurance Policy Holders Assn said in a Senate banking commitee hearing that the management of life insurance companies are controlling information which are critical in their plans to go public. The committee hearing was part of the hearings on legislation that would allow the four Canadian federally chartered insurance companies transform themselves into publicly owned companies for mutual companies owned by shareholders.

Privacy bill to cover Internet service providers

Article Abstract:

The Canadian government has passed a new privacy law that offers consumers protection when they access services provided by Internet service providers. The House of Commons approved the legislation, which requires that ISP and other e-commerce firms obtain permission from online users to market their personal information.

Finance predicts $5-billion surplus

Article Abstract:

Paul Martin, Canada's Minister of Finance, has announced that the Department of Finance has a $5 billion surplus for 2000. The surplus, which will be used for debt reduction in the department's new budget, will allow the department to allocate $3 billion for a contingency reserve.
