Preselections were on in Canberra for which party members were casting their ballots in the local plebiscites and trade union officials were busy making their deals for the central panel vote. The preselection battles have nothing to do with ideology and everything to do with power and this was observed at the way the candidates were soliciting the opposition and it was felt that it is important to have a debate about regeneration and renewal.

Reporter Steve Vizard was accused by his former bookkeeper Roy Hilliard in committal hearing in the Victorian County Court of using a private company, Creative Technology Investments, to secretly trade high-technology stocks using information gathered from his role as a director of Telstra. Hilliard suggests that Vizard had used his charitable foundation, Vizard's Performing Arts Service Group as a means of evading millions of dollars in tax.

Biota's anti-viral drug Relenza has a long-term future if prescribed as a wider anti-viral medication against bid flu. In 2005, Biota stocks climbed from 65 cents to a high of $2.27 as governments around the world are stocking anti-viral drugs due to the danger of bird flu.
