The Liberal-National Party Coalition caused its own defeat in the New South Wales Election in Apr, 1999, by replacing its leaders with 2 previously low-profile politicians only 4 months before election day. Electricity privatization was a major issue in the election, but the proponents of privatization failed to mention the recent falling revenues in the industry.

Can Howard sustain his interest rate?

John Howard's big-ticket promises would deliver his successor a large, painful bill, whether or not his interest-rate shibboleth undermines Mark Latham's mandates. The logistics of the campaign launch underline the way in which marketing, not issues, let alone such abstract concepts as philosophy or ideology, drive elections.

High cost of advertising on Aunty

An assessment is presented on the benefits and disadvantages of a policy change allowing advertising on Australian Broadcasting Co. programs. Benefits include increased revenue to support the ABC and reduce its dependence on government grants; disadvantages include increasingly populist programming.
