Prairie time bomb: tensions mount as the urban native population soars

Article Abstract:

Saskatchewan has a native population of 13%, half of which live in urban areas such as Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert. The unemployment rate among urban natives is 30%, and many are extremely poor. Provincial and native leaders met in Nov 1996, to discuss social services for natives.

Prairie cousins: Saskatchewan and Manitoba are also prospering

Article Abstract:

Although Alberta's economic growth has drawn many people away from Saskatchewan and Manitoba, these 2 provinces are economically strong. Saskatchewan's 3% unemployment rate is the lowest in Canada, and Manitoba's 3.7% job growth rate is twice the national rate.

Red River courage: a triumph of heart and spirit in Manitoba

Article Abstract:

The Red River flood in Manitoba is the worst in the 20th century. The Red River Floodway appears to have saved Winnipeg, but the flood there has not yet crested. Outpourings of support throughout Canada have been the only positive aspect of the disaster.
