Prescription for pain? Proposed legislation may raise costs for consumers

Article Abstract:

Consumer and Corporate Affairs Minister Pierre Blais introduced legislation that has the potential to increase medical costs and the profits of pharmaceutical companies in Canada. The bill would protect new product patents from generics for 20 years instead of about 16 years.

Stuck in the middle: Canada protests Washington's bill on Cuba trade

Article Abstract:

Canada opposes a US bill aimed at punishing third countries that do business with Cuba. The bill, which Pres Clinton plans to sign into law in Mar 1996, was passed after Cuban officials shot down two US civilian aircraft. Canada has a great deal of trade with Cuba.

Prescription for hope: new drugs can help many epileptics lead normal lives

Article Abstract:

There are three new drugs on the market, Gabapentin, Vigabatrin, and Lamotrigine, that are more effective than previous epilepsy drugs. The new drugs are also more expensive, costing $300 a month or more, and their long term effects are unknown.
