Prison health care: Keeping substance abusers out of jail

Article Abstract:

M. Douglas Anglin, associate director of the Integrated Substance Abuse Program (ISAP), University of California, has estimated that about 85 percent of all incarcerated people have substance-abuse problems at some point. Prison-based treatment with after-care is considered to be more effective, and experts also believe that diverting substance abusers altogether is more effective than throwing them in jail as it helps them through the inevitable difficulties of overcoming addiction.

Combating addiction: Background: Sick or sinning?

Article Abstract:

The question of addiction being a disease or not is a very debatable issue since a long time, as many physicians consider it to be a more of an ethical topic and portray substance-abuse as a sin committed by the addicts. The analysts also believe that since addiction causes various physical, as well as mental problems, it should be medically treated like a disease and hence leave the topic unclear and contradictory.

Combating addiction: Understanding addiction

Article Abstract:

The ample amount of information on the operation of several drugs with their treatments is also not enough to truly understand addiction, as the various drugs have completely different effects on different people. The review proves that in spite of being a disease that can be biologically determined, addiction is also a genetic phenomenon and depends greatly on the genes and the brain structure of the addicts.
