Putting yourself into the picture

Article Abstract:

Virtual Reality Laboratories' $129.95 Vistapro simulation software allows users to create simulated natural landscapes on microcomputers. Users can either create their own scenes or use the US Geologic Survey files that are included with the program to create reproductions of actual landscapes. After opening with a flat view of the current landscape, a series of choices are made that transform the flat landscape into the desired design. Users can change the landscape through the use of blending, shading and texture functions. Lakes, rivers and trees can be added while the timber and snow line can be adjusted. An animation feature gives the user the sensation of moving throughout the scene. Vistapro is not a drawing program but rather creates landscapes based on the user's directions. The program runs under DOS and requires 640Kbytes of RAM, VGA or better graphics and a hard disk with three Mbytes of available space.

An instant librarian

Article Abstract:

The Software Toolworks' $149.95 Toolworks Desk Reference is the 'New York Public Library Desk Reference' in a software version. Available on two floppy disks, it takes up about 5Mbytes on a hard disk. It is a collection of facts that answer questions most often asked of reference librarians. The information, which is collected into 26 categories, is culled from other reference works. The software supports easy searching and retrieval using a keyboard or combination of keyboard and mouse. Users can access records by using the table of contents or the index, or by searching for particular words. Toolworks Desk Reference can be used as either terminate-and-stay resident (TSR) or as a stand-alone program. Toolworks Desk Reference requires MS-DOS 3.1 or later and at least 640 Kbytes of memory.
