Paul Martin, who is expected to propose cuts in 1995-96 Canadian federal outlays amounting to at least $6 billion, is engaged in a consultation process that opponents claim is tainted by special interest politics. Liberal Party parliamentarian George Baker is especially critical of Martin.

And now, bad news: the president resigns from the network in protest

Article Abstract:

CBC Pres Anthony Manera resigned abruptly on Feb 28, 1995, primarily because he was unhappy implementing large budget cuts. A preliminary plan called for the CBC to reduce its budget by $270 million by 1998. This would require laying off around 4,000 workers and closing regional stations.

Finance Minister Paul Martin's budget, delivered on Feb 22, 1994, did not deliver 'fundamental reform' as promised. Rather than making significant budget cuts, Martin bet that economic growth would generate the needed revenues.
