Recession slows Bombardier in Asia

Article Abstract:

Bombardier Inc., a Montreal, Quebec-based company, has seen its business prospects in Asia decline as a result of the economic crisis that continues to plague the region. Bombardier has already completed the state-of-the-art light rapid transit (LRT) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which it had hoped to serve as a showcase to sell the same infrastructure in other Asian countries. Bombardier initially delivered 70 rail cars to Kuala Lumpur and its hopes to add more rail cars have been thwarted by LRT system operator Putra's hesitation to proceed with its expansion plans. Two other Malaysian prospects, the province of Penang and the city of Johar Baru, have also backed out from heir plans to build mass transit systems.

Manulife's expansion into India delayed again

Article Abstract:

Manufacturers Life Insurance Co. of Toronto, Ontario, has decided to putt off its plan to establish a partnership with Unit Trust of India in order to enter India's insurance market. The move to delay its entry to the Indian market was resolved after India's coalition government issued its first budget on June 2, 1998 that made only a vague reference on whether Indian companies would be allowed to take on foreign partners. Manufacturers Life started talks with Unit Trust in 1997 to sell life insurance as well as retirement and pension products.
