Report says insurance consolidators a 'serious force'

The consolidators in the Canadian property and casualty (P&C) insurance brokerage business are expected to triple their share of the market to 15% over the next three years. In 1998, six major players already controlled around $1 billion annually in premium volume, or 5% of the entire primary P&C business. Among the big players are Equisure Financial Network and Canda Brokerlink Inc.

Series of TSE blunders opened door for new competition

The Toronto Stock Exchange will face competition from Montreal, Que.-based Nasdaq Canada. TSE, which has downplayed the significance of the establishment of Nasdaq Canada, has been criticized for a series of strategic miscalculations that have allowed competitors to emerge and prosper.
