A quirky loner goes mainstream; Apple strives to be like Sony and I.B.M., but it could sacrifice its innovative soul

Article Abstract:

The recent agreement between Apple Computer Inc and IBM is seen by some as significant of Apple's transformation into a 'mainstream' company. Apple, once known for supplying well-made machines to a relatively small customer base, now wants more market share and intends to be a major force in the industry rather than a niche player. Apple is cutting prices, aiming to broaden its products' appeal, and at the same time, the company is planning to make more powerful machines suited for use in large corporate networks. Apple's deal with IBM could help the company achieve its aims, but some observers are concerned that Apple's corporate culture might suffer. Apple's 'quirky individuality' has made the company into an innovative and popular organization, and the company's reputation has attracted bright and innovative employees.

Computer pioneer's moment of truth

Article Abstract:

Ascii Corp's Kazuhiko Nishi is doing everything he can to help his company avoid bankruptcy and pay back debts it accrued during the boom of the 1980s. The Ascii Corp borrowed substantially during its expansion years. Now that the Japanese stock market is beginning to show signs of weakness, the company finds itself unable to pay off some of it debts. Six banks are planning to help Ascii with $100 million to help pay off some of the debt. In exchange for the help, Nishi will have to sell parts of his business and he may have to relinquish some of his control over the company. Nishi is regarded as the consummate successful entrepreneur in Japan. His decline could signal a new trend in Japan and could discourage future businessmen from taking the gambles they need to keep Japanese business strong.
