Royal Oak mine gets last-minute reprieve

Article Abstract:

Royal Oak Mines Inc of Kirkland, WA, has been allowed by British Columbian inspectors to keep its Kemess mine open despite its failure the meet the province's tailings dam standards. The company was earlier ordered to shut down the mine because the main retaining walls of the dam failed the meet the government's standards. However, Royal Oak must still present a plan to deal with the tailings problems on Feb 12, 1999. The government will order to company to close the mine and cease mining operations if it failed to comply with the new deadline.

Bill Gates spends some spare change on Canadian silver miner

Pan American Silver Corp of Vancouver, British Columbia, has announced that Microsoft Corp CEO acquired a 10.3% in the company through one of his investment firns. The shares were acquired on the Nasdaq Stock Market at prices ranging from $4.87 to $5.27 a share between Aug 3 and Sep 20, 1999, through Cascade Investment LLC of Seattle, WA. The company is planning to boost its annual silver output to 22 million oz by 2001.
