Coke cooks up some perks to refresh workers

Article Abstract:

Coca-Cola will institute half-days on Fridays and will add an extra paid holiday to boost employee morale. The measures were implemented as the soft drink company prepares to slash 5,200 jobs while its stock price has continuously declined for two years. Employee turnover at Coca-Cola has risen to 10% in 2000, from 8% in 1999, and 6.7% in 1996 to 1998. Another company that is experiencing employee morale problems is Microsoft. The company issued an additional 70 million options to placate employee worries.

Rubber meets the road for Saturn's ballyhooed contract

Article Abstract:

Saturn's pristine working image with its workers will be shattered if it will not resolve the dispute over the 1998 second-quarter bonus to workers. The workers believe that they should be receiving a $1,400 bonus based on production and quality, but GM contends that it should only be $390. As a result, 5,000 of Saturn's United Auto Workers voted 96% to permit a strike. Saturn's long-time marketing strategy that parlayed on its near-perfect relationship with its workers will also be buried in effect if the strike pushes through.
